Over 4,400 Pounds of Material Collected at Post-Holiday Recycling Event
Avon, CO – On January 5th, several organizations teamed up to host a Post-Holiday Recycling Event for hard-to-recycle items. Many Eagle County residents took advantage of this easy and affordable option to dispose of unwanted recyclables. Accepted items included bulbs, batteries, Christmas lights, electronics, paper shredding, Styrofoam and textiles.
A total of 4,481 pounds of material was collected and diverted from the Eagle County landfill. A breakdown by material is provided below:
- E-waste – 3,212 pounds
- Paper shredding – 1,100 pounds
- Styrofoam (EPS) – 57 pounds
- Christmas lights – 80 pounds
- Clothing – 32 pounds
Based on the Eagle County Energy Inventory from 2014, the Eagle County landfill accounted for 131,328 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions, which equates to 10% of total CO2e emissions. The Climate Action Plan for the Eagle County Community reflects a strong commitment to reduce the community’s GHG emissions by 25% by 2025, and a minimum of 80% by 2050. Events like the Post-Holiday Recycling Event can assist heavily in meeting waste diversion goals, as well as the overarching goals of the Climate Action Plan.
Sponsors of the Post-Holiday Recycling Event included Walking Mountains Science Center, Vail Honeywagon, Dart Container Corporation, Alliance Record Services and the Town of Avon. Staff from the various host organizations managed all aspects of the event, including accepting materials, collecting fees and sorting the items into appropriate containers in preparation for shipment to Denver. A portion of the proceeds will be remitted to the Climate Action Collaborative for the Eagle County community to help reduce carbon emissions 25% by 2025 and 80% by 2050.
