Town of Avon Updates Town Manager Search
Avon, CO - Since late June of this year, the Town of Avon has been conducting an extensive search for a new Town Manager. This search has been nationwide in scope, and initially resulted in over 60 responses.
According to Lance J. Richards, Avon’s Human Resources Director, “We started with 60+ applicants, and then winnowed that down to 47 which were reviewed by the Search Steering Committee. From that review, we selected a small number of candidates with whom we held video interviews.”
“We were favorably impressed with several of the candidates we saw,” said Jennie Fancher, Mayor of Avon and Chair of the Search Steering Committee. A couple of candidates, she indicated, “had highly relevant experience working in mountain towns, and in towns with strong visitor economies. We were also pleased to see some experience in economic development.”
“I was especially pleased to see a diverse range of candidates, reflecting different levels of education, different genders and ethnicities, and a nice distribution of years of municipal management experience” said Richards, who was appointed by Council as the Facilitator for the search process.
For next steps, the Council anticipates having a very small number of candidates visit Avon for private interviews with Council and senior members of Town Staff. From that round of interviews, the Town expects to name Finalists. Under Colorado law, the names of those Finalists will be disclosed once they are determined.
“A very real priority for us right now is to keep the candidates’ names confidential. Most of our candidates are currently in either Town Manager or Assistant Town Manager roles, and it would be truly unprofessional for us to release those names and endanger their current jobs” said Richards. “Because of this confidentiality requirement, our interviews thus far have been focused around our Councilors.”
Fancher offered that “I’m really looking forward to the Finalist round of interviews, as we’ll be able to include many of our Avon stakeholders in the interview process, whether on interview panels, or in more informal conversational settings with the candidates. Of course, we’ll likely know who the four people will be who are elected to Council, so they’ll be a part of this decision process as well.”
