Fire Crews Quickly Suppress Small Wildland Fires in Avon
Avon – On Monday evening at approximately 6:48 p.m., Eagle River Fire, Vail Fire and Avon PD responded to a small wildland fire that started beside the bike path behind the Lodge at Brookside Condominiums complex near Highway 6.
Eagle River Fire and Vail Fire crews suppressed the fire within a short period of time. There was no damage to any structures and no persons were injured. The fire companies cleared the scene at approximately 7:37 p.m.
A short time later, at 7:50 p.m., an Avon police officer, while investigating the source of the original fire and the flammability of the dry ground fuels, inadvertently caused the fire to restart. The same fire crews immediately responded back to the scene. The fire grew to one half acre but was fully suppressed. The fire personnel cleared the scene at 8:39 p.m. No structures sustained any damage and no persons were injured during the second fire suppression operation.
Avon PD plans to conduct an internal review of the incident. Residents are reminded, as we remind ourselves, to be vigilant when using fire, given the drier than usual conditions. Avon PD urges residents to be cognizant of Eagle County fire restrictions, if and when they are put into effect.
