Have a Safe Holiday: Designate a Sober Driver and Buckle-Up

Avon, CO – The Avon Police Department reminds the public to plan ahead this holiday by designating a sober driver before drinking and for everyone in a vehicle to buckle-up. Celebrations that surround the Independence Day holiday result in one of the most dangerous times to be on the road.  That is why the Avon Police Department and other public safety agencies will be out looking for impaired drivers to ensure public safety.  If you notice someone driving under the influence, please call 911 immediately. 
 
Driving under the influence includes alcohol and drug impairment. To be charged with Driving under the Influence (DUI) as a juvenile it only takes an alcohol reading of 0.02, for an adult an alcohol reading of 0.08 and an alcohol reading of 0.05 for a Driving While Ability Impaired (DWAI) charge.  Driving under the influence of drugs or prescription medications is a serious issue as well.  Just like with alcohol, a person under the influence of marijuana can be charged with DUI.  The consequences of a DUI are dependent on the driver but they can include fines, jail time and a revoked license.
 
The Avon Police Department also reminds the traveling public to buckle-up. Taking the time to do so can save your life. Approximately 80 percent of traffic fatalities occur within 25 miles of home. If involved in a collision, wearing a seat belt will significantly increase your chances of survival.
 
A recent Click-It or Ticket campaign in Avon spurred an increase in seat belt usage from 90.5 percent to 94.25 percent. Enforcement of seat belt violations in Avon is a primary violation, meaning that people can be pulled over for not using their seat belts.
