[ARCHIVED] Lake Street Phase I Complete, Phase II to Begin

On Monday, August 25, Phase I of Lake Street will be complete and open to the public. Lake Street is a new roadway that begins at the previous north intersection of Benchmark Road and West Beaver Creek Boulevard. Lake Street will run from West Beaver Creek, along Buck Creek, through the former Avon Recreation Center parking lot and proceed south between Avon’s Municipal Building and the Fire Station, terminating at the new at-grade railroad crossing on the west side of Riverfront Lane.

Traffic patterns of Phase I of Lake Street are similar to pre-construction conditions, with motorists able to turn onto the northern portion of Lake Street from West Beaver Creek Boulevard. Lake Street can also be used to access the northern entrance of Benchmark Road and provides access to the new Recreation Center parking lot on the east and Lakeside Terrace, Falcon Point, and Beaver Creek West to the west. The road will temporarily dead-end in a portion of the existing Recreation Center parking lot north of Avon Public Library.

Commencement of Phase II will begin shortly after the opening of Phase I. Impacts during Phase II will be primarily centered on the east Municipal Building parking lot area and the eastern edge of Harry A. Nottingham Park. The east Municipal Building parking lot will be closed. Visitors to the Municipal Building and/or Nottingham Park are asked to utilize the west Municipal Building Lot or the new Avon Recreation Center North Lot. Pedestrians will be able to access Harry A. Nottingham Park from the Recreation Center lot via an improved pathway adjacent to the main Recreation Center entrance.

Getting Around During Phase II (August – October, 2008)Phase II involves the construction of the south half of Lake Street, from the previous volleyball court location to the railroad tracks.

• Access to the Recreation Center and Harry A. Nottingham Park will be from either the north (West Beaver Creek Blvd) or to the south (existing Benchmark Road between the Seasons and the Avon Library).

• Direct vehicular access from the Municipal Building to the Recreation Center parking lot will be CLOSED.

• Some pedestrian and recreation uses of the Harry A. Nottingham Park path will be interrupted during construction for path replacement and improvements.

Where to Park during Phase II

• The new Recreation Center parking lot and a portion of the north parking lot along Lake Street will be the only public parking during this phase. Access to the Municipal Building will be limited, as the west lot will be the only available parking. Park visitors are encouraged to park in the new Recreation Center lot to lessen interference with municipal operations.

Lake Street is a critical step in realizing the vision of the Avon West Town Center plan, creating a sustainable, transit-oriented ‘live-work-play’ community in the heart of Avon and revitalizing the town core. The Town of Avon appreciates public patience and cooperation during these temporary construction inconveniences.
