Seven Residents Graduate from the Avon Citizens Police Academy

Avon, CO—On October 15, 2012 seven community residents graduated from the fourth annual Avon Citizens’ Police Academy. During the course of instruction, attendees received hands-on, practical training in core functions of community policing. The first night of the academy consisted of the State of the Police Department and crime scene investigations. Following the first night of instruction, attendees learned verbal judo, DUI detection/enforcement, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Operations, Eagle County Jail operations, and self-defense techniques. Additionally, students had the opportunity to test their skills on the Firearms Simulator while learning to evaluate shoot/don’t shoot situations. The final day of instruction consisted of firearms instruction at a local gun range.

Graduates of the 2012 Academy Class include: Gail McFarland, Juan Rodriguez, Brenda Torres, Edgar Torres, Martha McBride, Christopher Delgado, and Kathryn Biggs.

“I am very proud of this diverse group of community residents who have taken time out of their busy schedules to learn, give back, and support our town through community policing,” said Chief Bob Ticer. “The Avon Police Department’s mission statement is ‘Make a Difference,’ and I believe these seven fine community members have, and will, continue to make a positive difference in our neighborhoods through their partnership with the Police Department.”
