Avon, CO — The Avon Police Department has been nationally accredited for the last seven years. This accreditation is through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®). Avon PD is the smallest agency in Colorado with this accreditation and the only agency west of the Denver Metro Area, except for the Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, both state wide agencies. Approximately 1% of law enforcement agencies in the United States are accredited.

The current accreditation cycle is for four years, and this month sees the end of our current four-year cycle. During the accreditation cycle, the agency submits annual reports and participates in annual remote web-based assessments attesting continued compliance with 179 national standards.

As part of the accreditation evaluation by CALEA, a site-based assessment team will arrive October 21 through October 23, 2019 to examine all aspects of Avon Police Department policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services. The team will be required to verify that the Avon Police Department meets the Commission’s national standards. “This is a great opportunity for the men and women of the Avon Police Department to showcase their hard work and the community policing/outreach that they do every day. In addition, it provides the opportunity to showcase the robust relationships that the department enjoys with our community, with our first responder partners and with a variety of nonprofits,” said Police Chief Greg Daly.

Members of the community or other agency / organization personnel can offer comments regarding their relationships and their assessment of the Avon Police Department either by phone, in a public community meeting or in writing.

  • By telephone- The public may call to speak with an assessor at (970) 748- 4457 on October 22, 2019 between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

  • In person- Members of the community and other agency employees are invited to offer comments at a public information session on October 22, 2019 beginning at 4:00 p.m. The session will be conducted at the Avon Elementary School, 850 W Beaver Creek Blvd, Avon, CO 81620

  • In writing- Anyone wishing to offer written comments about the Avon Police Department’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation are requested to write to: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 22030-2215 or call (703) 352-4225 or email calea@calea.org.

Telephone comments as well as in-person appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards.  A copy of the standards is available at the Avon Police Department, 60 Buck Creek Road.  If you are interested in a copy of the standards or need to schedule a time to review them please contact Accreditation Manager, Krista Jaramillo at (970) 748-4006.
