Hahnewald Barn

FINAL - SURVEY QUESTION - HAHNEWALD BARN PHASE 1 PROJECT 2019 03 05

FINAL - FACT SHEET - HAHNEWALD BARN PHASE 1 PROJECT 2019 03 05

Background

The historic Hahnewald Barn is located in Avon, Colorado. Still on its original site along the north side of the Eagle River and adjacent to world-famous Beaver Creek Resort, the Barn has been in continuous use since it was built in Avon. The Barn was built about 1908 to shelter livestock on the lower level and store hay in the upper level under an expansive, ventilated gable roof. Since then, three pioneering ranch families used the Barn in their farming and ranching operations: the Hahnewalds (1908 to 1915), the Kroellings (1915 to 1948), and the Nottinghams (1948 to 1972).

Since 1972, the Barn has been part of the site of the Avon Wastewater Treatment Plant. Presently owned by the Eagle River Water & Sanitation District, the Barn is used as an on-site storage facility. Sometime in the near future, the Avon Wastewater Treatment Plant must locate tertiary filters in the current location of the Barn as a result of new wastewater treatment regulations.

Current Efforts

A Survey Question about the Hahnewald Barn Phase 1 Project has been mailed to all qualified Avon electors. Voters must follow the submittal instructions identified on the Survey Question. Voters may deposit their Survey Question in the ballot box located in the lobby of Avon Town Hall, located at 100 Mikaela Way in Avon, or voters may deposit their Survey Question ballot in the U.S. Mail. Ballots must be received by the Town Clerk’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on April 2nd.

For Avon residents who do not receive a Survey Question mail packet and are interested in participating in the survey, please visit www.govotecolorado.com to register to vote, then submit proof of voter registration and Avon residence to the Avon Town Clerk between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Once voter registration and Avon residence are confirmed, a Survey Question mail packet will be provided.

At the February 26th Avon Town Council meeting, the Town Council passed a motion to refer a survey question to registered Avon voters concerning the Hahnewald Barn Phase 1 Project. The Town Council has received substantial public input in support and in opposition to the Hahnewald Barn Phase 1 Project, which led to their decision to solicit input from all registered voters in a community survey format. Phase 1 of the Hahnewald Barn Project would include moving the Hahnewald Barn to the old Town Hall site and placing the structure on a permanent foundation in order to permanently preserve the barn. The cost estimate for Phase 1 is $1 million for moving and preservation of the Hahnewald Barn, plus $600,000 for demolition of the old Town Hall.

For questions about the survey, please contact Preston Neill, Acting Town Manager, at pneill@avon.org or 970-390-7848.
