‘Little Free Library’ Placed on Possibilities Plaza in Avon

Free book exchange seeks to inspire a love of reading

Avon, CO – Little Free Libraries are a global phenomenon. The small, front-yard book exchanges number 36,000 around the world and are located in 70 countries—from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan. Now, a new Little Free Library on Possibilities Plaza in Avon will join the movement to share books, bring people together and create communities of readers.

On Thursday, a Little Free Library was placed on the eastern side of Possibilities Plaza along the Main Street Mall in Avon. The library contains more than twenty books, in both English and Spanish, for readers of all ages. The idea of the book exchange is simple: Take a book, leave a book. Little Free Libraries are dedicated to increasing book access and forging community connections. Little Free Libraries are available in Carbondale, Frisco, and Breckenridge, but the library on Possibilities Plaza is the first of its kind in Eagle County.

“It’s our hope that this Little Free Library will inspire a friendlier and more connected community through paper books and a simple wooden box. The digital world is great, but nothing beats a paper book to share and exchange with residents and guests,” said Councilor Scott Prince, who worked with members of Council and Town staff to bring the project to fruition. “We want it to become a destination for people, whether they’re Avon residents out on an evening walk or visitors to the Town.”

The Little Free Library nonprofit organization has been honored by the Library of Congress, the National Book Foundation, and the American Library Association, and Reader’s Digest named them one of the “50 Surprising Things We Love about America.” Each year, nearly 10 million books are shared in Little Free Libraries.
